Over thousands of babies in the world are born in a premature condition. Premature babies or preemies are those who are born little earlier than the expected time of birth. In one of the shocking revelation from a study conducted by the team of Casey Crump of Stanford University, it was found that the health problems in the premature babies are very common. As per the study, the premature babies more likely to die than the matured babies in their early age of life. Also, compared to young adults, they also face slightly increased death rates. The premature babies who have even born just two weeks back also have a higher risk of mortality.

The findings which were published in the journal of American Medical Association have sent an alarming signal to the healthcare industry. Before the findings, it was usually believed that once the premature babies survive the earlier years of birth, then they maintain a normal mortality rate. The study was based on Swedish data where it was mentioned that the absolute mortality rate was less than even one per 1,000 people every year. The mortality rate for the young adults who were born between 22 and 27 weeks gestation was 0.94 per 1,000 people, whereas, for the infants who were born between 37 and 42 weeks of age, the mortality rate was 0.46 per 1,000. Statistically, there is nothing to worry about as the numbers are very low. The study was conducted on 675,000 Swedes born between 1973 and 1978. It was found that children born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are more susceptible to die before five years of age. However, during late childhood and adolescence, the figure vanishes, but the fact re emerges in early adulthood, i.e. from 18 to 36 years of age. Earlier death usually arises due to various health problems like heart disease, asthma and diabetes.

Preemies

According to the Casey Crump, about 12 to 13 percent of new born in US are preterm and their rate of survival has increased considerably over the last few years. The facts which are mentioned above about the mortality rate send an alarming signal to the health industry. Due to the increased risk of various health problems which are faced during the course of life, it is important that the survivors of preterm birth must consider going for the regular health check ups and screening. It is also recommended that they maintain a healthy life by avoiding smoking and obesity.
